"I have gone through the whole city...

Trieste

The Ghetto

View from Piazza Unità d'Italia

Umberto Saba monument

"I have gone through the whole city.
Then I walked up a steep ascent,
densely populated here, desert over there,
shut in by a low wall:
a cosy nook where alone

I sit; and it seems to me that where it ends
the city ends, too.
Trieste has a sulky

gracefulness. When one likes it,

she is like a harsh and ravenous rascal,

with blue eyes and hands too big

to give a flower;

like a love

with jealousy.

From this uphill street every church,

every alley of hers
I discover, whether it leads to the encumbered beach,
or to the hill where, on the stony
top, a house, the last one, clings to it.

Around
every thing a strange

air circulates, a tormenting air,
the native air.
My city, which everywhere is alive,
has a nook made for me, for my life
pensive and averse."

Umberto Saba (1883 – 1957)

Serbian-orthodox church of San Spiridione, Trieste (Italy)

The Orthodox Serb community is present in Trieste for many years and is integrated into the city's social structure.
The San Spiridione Church was built over an already existing structure which dated back to 1751: the old building was demolished after the Serb's separation from the Greek Orthodox community in around 1861.
Currently the Trieste's Orthodox Serb community is the largest in Italy for the proximity to the ex-Jugoslavan borders.

The seeds of smiles

By Chivalries as tiny,
A Blossom, or a Book,
The seeds of smiles are planted -
Which blossom in the dark.

Da gesta così minute,
un fiore, o un libro,
sono piantati i semi dei sorrisi -
che fioriscono nel buio.

Emily Dickinson
